Successful biodegradability occurs when placed
in compost or soil where microorganisms can
breakdown and turn into humus.
Humus is the life of your soil without it, soil is inactive and unable to
produce plants, grass and flowers.
Humus retains moisture in the soil
Loosens the soil permitting better aeration and drainage
Encourages the increase of soil organisms which make nutrients available to
plants
Adds body to light soil and loosens heavy sticky soil
It is abundant, renewable and essential for life to exist on this planet.
Old, stable humus can sit in the soil for centuries with minimal
decomposition
however it will eventually cycle back from where it came.
Formation of new humus is critical to maintaining a stable presence in soil.
In cultivated environments, humus is easier to maintain than it is to replace.
Current agricultural and horticultural practices have little effect on old humus.
Many of these same cultivation methods can destroy new humus in the
formative stages
when it is most vulnerable to decay.
What is humus?
The dark organic material in soil, produced by the decomposition
of vegetable or animal matter and essential to the fertility of the earth
